DIY: Calculating Your AC Costs 🧮

Grab your latest energy bill and a calculator! Your bill will usually give you an idea of the electricity units consumed. For extra points, use a kilowatt-hour (kWh) meter if your utility company doesn’t provide that info.

For a rough calculation:

  1. Let’s say your AC chugs about 100 watts when going full throttle.
  2. A watt-hour is simply 1 watt of power used for an hour.
  3. During peak heat, your home might be using about 0.1A on a 120v AC circuit.

Calculate like so:

1 amps x 60 cycles = 6 amps 6 amps x 10 seconds = 60 watts 60 watts x 100 seconds = 6 kWh per hour
